                                                 Volunteers Week Reports

Eastbourne & Lewes/Seaford:

To celebrate Volunteers Week 2007, Homecall in Eastbourne, Lewes & Seaford held an Information Day at the Eastbourne and Newhaven Sainsbury’s stores. The event took place during Volunteers Week on Wednesday 6th June and Thursday 7th June. It was a way of raising the profile of Homecall and a chance to reach visually impaired people, who may not be aware of the service available to them. Also due to it being Volunteers Week we were able to speak with much needed potential new volunteers who were interested in helping. We would like to thank everyone who spoke with us and those who helped raise just over £20 in donations.

Our thanks go to Sainsbury’s, Hampden Park, Eastbourne and Sainsbury’s Newhaven for their use of their store and their co-operation during the two days.

Bexhill:

Afternoon Tea 5th June, Cooden Beach Hotel, Bexhill.

All 100 tickets were sold. The weather was kind to us and many people dressed for the occasion making for an atmosphere to suit. The room was laid out in a fan of long tables with white linen tablecloths decorated with gold linen napkins and posies of yellow and white flowers.

Once everyone was seated, afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and cakes were served with pots of tea and coffee during which the musical entertainment took place, lasting about an hour. This was well received. After tea, a comfort break and the opportunity to sell raffle tickets, James Braxton took to the floor and charmed his audience covering several subjects from the contemporary art market, the art displays at the De la Warr Pavilion and on to a couple of amusing stories attached to his connection with Bargain Hunt and Flog It. James then kindly conducted an auction of 6 watercolours and a plate. Following this the raffle was drawn. The guests were thanked for their support and nine predetermined people were pleased to be able to take home the table decorations.

Our entertainers gave of their time freely to support Homecall and all the raffle prizes, the auction items and flowers were donated. The only outlay for the afternoon was the actual cost of the tea. The Afternoon Tea event raised £1125 for Homecall.

Bexhill Rotary Club Sponsored Walk.

The Rotary Sponsored Walk took place on Sunday 10th June, starting in Bexhill in somewhat misty weather. Homecall was represented by 22 people, comprising one client and several volunteers along with their families and friends. Three completed the 2 mile walk along the seafront, two completed the 15 miles to Battle and back, and the remaining seventeen walked the 7 miles to Crowhurst and back. As the morning passed the mist cleared inland and everyone enjoyed the countryside walk in rather hot sunny weather. Homecall is becoming well known in Bexhill for fundraising whenever the opportunity presents itself and the Bexhill Observer took all details and a photograph of as many walkers present at the time. It is not yet known how much will be raised but every penny is well deserved.

Hastings and Rural Rother:

Hastings Voluntary Association “Volunteers Together” held an event in Priory Meadow on 1st June where several charities including Homecall had a stand to try and promote volunteering in the town.  Sadly it was quite poorly attended by both voluntary organisations and the public, but we did manage to hand out a few leaflets and talk to about 4 or 5 people about the benefits of volunteering for Homecall.  As yet we have had no new volunteers from this but there is still time.

Reports from The Rural Rother and Wealden Cream Teas will follow after the events take place on 22nd and 29th June.
